Transference Focused Psychotherapy (TFP)

TFP is an effective psychodynamically-oriented psychotherapy, capable of producing dramatic clinical change in patients with personality disorders, including Borderline and Narcissistic.  TFP decreases self-destructive behavior, improves affect regulation, and targets interpersonal difficulties that interfere with an individual's ability to function at work and in relationships.  Improvement is a result of fundamental change in personality structure.

The Maudsley approach
The Maudsley approach is a three stage family treatment for eating disorders. A core aspect of this treatment is helping the family to view the eating disorder as a separate entity from the affected family member. The initial phase of treatment seeks to empower parents to effectively take control of their child’s eating and exercising behavior, in order to facilitate weight restoration and to shift power away from the eating disorder. In the second phase, the responsibility for weight management is gradually returned to the child, in a developmentally appropriate manner. The third phase of treatment addresses issues in individual and family functioning related to normal adolescent development.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT is a psychosocial treatment developed by Marsha Linehan, specifically to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder. While DBT was designed for individuals with borderline personality disorder, it is used for patients with other diagnoses as well. The treatment itself is based largely in behaviorist theory with some cognitive therapy elements as well. There are two essential parts of the treatment: An individual component in which issues that come up during the week are discussed, and a weekly skills training group, in which participants learn to use specific skills from the four DBT modules: core mindfulness skills, emotion regulation skills, interpersonal effectiveness skills and distress tolerance skills.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT is a therapy based on the belief that problematic thinking (wrong assumptions, generalizations, etc.) leads to maladaptive behavior and emotional distress. CBT aims to change everyday thoughts and behaviors in order to improve functioning. It has become widely used to treat depression, generalized anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety, phobias, and other difficulties. The particular therapeutic techniques vary according to the individual’s needs, but often center on cognitive restructuring (examining assumptions behind thought patterns) and on behavioral change. Relaxation and distraction techniques are also commonly included.

Problem Solving Therapy (PST)
PST is a behavioral treatment that teaches a step-by-step approach to indentifying problems, generating solutions, evaluating solutions, implementing changes, and assessing the results. It is often offered as a time-limited treatment, and focuses on addressing current difficulties as well as developing proficiency in the approach for later use with new problems.

Addictions, Harm Reduction
Harm Reduction approaches to addictive behavior differ from the all-or-nothing approach of the abstinence model. In this model, excessive behaviors occur along a continuum of risk, and changing addictive behavior is a stepwise process, complete abstinence being the final step. The harm reduction model asserts that any movement in the direction of reduced harm is positive. The health and well-being of the individual is of primary concern. Attempts should be made to reduce the harm of their habits as much as possible.
